Steven Mendell, the CEO of Westland/Hallmark, the slaughterhouse that was closed after an undercover invesigation by HSUS, testified before Congress on March 13. Mendell admitted that the HSUS video depicted animals being abused. He also admitted that sick cows were placed in the human food supply by his company. Westland/Hallmark mainly supplied beef to school children.
Congressmen from Michigan, Dingell and Stupek, grilled Mendell about the possibility of the "downer cows" passing Mad Cow proteins to the consumers. Mendell and his priced ex-congressman mouthpiece both tried to downplay the risks.
It's extremely frustrating and actually frightening that Americans are not paying attention to this story. This is the food being fed to their children, animals that are sick and treated with outrageous cruelty. There are both moral and health implications concerning the meat industry and the American public is ignoring the entire issue.
