Tuesday was very sad for rescues and animal lovers in Montcalm County. After being told that animals would not be killed or given to research until 7 days after their stray hold ended, all available animals were either killed or taken away by the research dealer yesterday, April 8th. Rescues arrived in the morning to pick up a load of dogs including some adorable little beagles only to find out that they were supposedly gassed by the dealer early that morning.
Someone is going to have to explain to me the mentality of shelters that do these things. Macomb County Animal Control truly seems to feel more comfortable killing animals than it does sending them to rescues or finding new homes. Montcalm is so twisted it gives me nightmares. What makes a governmental agency and governmental employees think they can get away with this stuff? Is it the ultimate power trip, getting to decide who lives or who dies. In Montcalm is it laziness in the extreme? Since the employees do not put the animals in the gas barrel and are not there when it's done, do they care even a little bit about the animals in their shelter? Or is the day of the killing a great one since there are so few kennels to clean. Since I'm not a shrink and not into spending time dwelling on evil, I'll just decide that I'll never understand, nor do I want to.
All I know is we have a chance to make a difference for the animals in Macomb County and Montcalm County. We all need to write, call, fax or skywrite to the commissioners in both counties and let them know that this is not acceptable. Animals lives are worth a hell of a lot more than the effort either county is expending and we demand that changes occur immediately, not in some unknown distant future.
