What a wonderful turnout at the City of River Rouge council meeting last night. Sixty people to speak out and stand up for animals, and look it is working. I've always said that the best way to end the most hideous abuses of Michigan's shelter system is to shine the light of truth and once the public finds out what is really going on it will be over. In February, I wrote about Macomb County Animal Control Shelter and just 3 months later there is a study to go no-kill, the shelter must work with rescue groups and they are showcasing their adoptable animals online. Last night, River Rouge City Council unanimously voted to stop gassing animals and to begin the process of working with volunteers, other shelters and learning about adoption. All that was needed was knowledge, people needed to know what was going on.
Here's a note to my critics, especially those who mourn, what will happen if shelters close because of what I'm doing. The days of sitting back and quietly condoning gassing, selling to research and poor overall practises are over. We will not be quiet, we will speak out on behalf of animals. This is our tax money and donation dollars being used to basically cruelly exterminate our companions and it is going to stop.
In the next few days, I will be highlighting shelters that kill by gas and also putting the blame where it belongs. It's time for truth to be told and hold on to your hats, I'm going to tell.
Oh, River Rouge and Macomb County, your work has begun, it's not over, the public will not let you revert to your old ways so embrace the culture of life. It's a lot more fun than killing thousands of dogs and cats.
